«A revolution [...] on the wings of a dove»: thus Saba defines his first and last novel, Ernesto . This study aims at questioning the meaning of this Nietzschean definition and at inquiring the revolutionary character the author gives - or wants to give - to his work. The analysis focuses on the protagonist, who is the bearer of this revolution, and particular attention is given to the elements that inspired Saba for the creation of his “primitive” feature: animals. Animals as symbolic devices, implicitly present in the novel and scattered throughout Saba's work, are here highlighted as key factors to the interpretation of  Ernesto and, possibly, of Saba's poetics in general.
